The nervous system has two distinct parts: the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord). The nervous system is an extraordinarily complex communication system that can send and receive voluminous amounts of information simultaneously. However, the system is vulnerable to diseases and injuries. From the brain come all thoughts, beliefs, memories, behaviors, and moods. The brain is the site of thinking and the control center for the rest of the body.

Cancer

A cancer is a group of cells (usually derived from a single cell) that has lost its normal control mechanisms and thus has unregulated growth. Cancerous (malignant) cells can develop from any tissue within any organ. As cancerous cells grow and multiply, they form a mass of cancerous tissue—called a tumor—that invades and destroys normal adjacent tissues. The term "tumor" refers to an abnormal growth or mass; tumors can be cancerous or noncancerous. Cancerous cells from the primary (initial) site can spread (metastasize) throughout the body.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD s)

Sexually transmitted (venereal) diseases are infections that are passed from person to person through sexual contact. Because sexual activity includes intimate contact, it provides an easy opportunity for organisms to spread from one person to another. A variety of infectious microorganisms can be spread by sexual contact.

STDs are among the most common infectious diseases. It is estimated that over 3 million people contract gonorrhea and chlamydia every year in the United States—making these the two most common STDs in the country.

Respiratory Tract Infections

The respiratory system starts at the nose and mouth and continues through the airways to the lungs. Air enters the respiratory system through the nose and mouth and passes down the throat (pharynx) and through the voice box, or Adam's apple (larynx). The entrance to the larynx is covered by a small flap of tissue (epiglottis) that automatically closes when swallowing, thus preventing food or drink from entering the airways.

Musculoskeletal Disorders

The musculoskeletal system provides form, stability, and movement to the human body. It consists of the body's bones (which make up the skeleton), muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage, and other connective tissue. The term "connective tissue" is used to describe the tissue that binds other tissues and organs together. Its chief components are elastic fibers and collagen, a protein substance. Connective tissue provides support to the various structures of the body—it holds organs in place and provides the underlying structure for all tissues.
